Period: 2014
Project Type: Feasibility analysis of the PMIS System
Customer: International NGO
Description:
The client’s organization’s Project Management Office was exploring the feasibility of implementing an in-house Project Management Information System based on an on-premises installation of the Microsoft Project Server.
My role:
I was tasked with the initial assessment of the functionality and proof of concept. The goal of the assessment was to define if investing in such a system at that point would be beneficial for the organization. Part of my task was to identify how the project management framework would be supported by such a system.
Tasks accomplished:
Assessed the implemented Project Management methodology
Documented and mapped the current processes
Identified the required resources at PMO and in IT
Created a plan of action
Periodically assessed the results and provided status updates
Played the role of SME in MS Project Online and MS Project Server
Collaborated with IT team on resolving technical issues with the configuration
Created a functional demo for the PMO
Conducted project closure
Budget: ~$30,000
Project Team: 3
1. MS Project Server SME/Project Manager
2. IT Specialist
3. PMO Representative
Duration: 3 months
Outcome:
After 3 months of analysis, a working configuration was proposed and demonstrated. Leadership’s decision was to postpone the implementation until after the upgrade to the newest server versions since the recommended configuration required the latest version of server software. Since the cloud version of the Project Server was not yet available at that time, the cost of running a separate infrastructure component on premises just for the Project Server was considered prohibitive.
